After Empire and the Emptiness of Nagarjuna
If you’re interested, you can read a draft of my paper for Sharon Welch’s course on postcolonial comparative religious ethics. I take a chapter from her book, After Empire, and apply the doctrine of Emptiness to her ethical framework. In short, I argue that her two-level analysis (individual and conceptual) can be helped by returning to the "conventional" level and not engaging in polemics against certain forms of thought.
The paper was difficult to write–so much is being alluded to in her short chapter, and so many concepts intertwine with others. Too, there was very little space to defend some of the assumptions I make about the validity of Nagarjuna’s conclusions. As always, criticism and comments are very welcome.
