Jeff Wall and Wittgenstein

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

I don’t follow modern art, so I was unaware of Jeff Wall until I encountered him, by chance, at the Chicago Art Institute on Friday. That day was the first of a retrospective on his 30 year career. Later, I Googled him, to find out more about his work, since it was impressive [...]

Still here

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Posting will resume later in the week, probably the weekend.  Settling into a new city is taking my energy away from academics (of which there’s plenty to be focusing on, with class in a few weeks).

If we cut your heart in half

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Would you then have one half the circulation?  Or, if we cut it in four quarters, one quarter the circulation?  Sheesh.

Reducing gender

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Posting is going to slow down while the move to Chicago ramps up.  However, I want to clarify the question I asked about reduction yesterday.  (And again, these posts are the equivalent of Moleskine scribbles, since I’m just encountering the ideas and talking out loud.)
I think that another way of framing the question I have [...]

Lived body and gender

Monday, June 18th, 2007

One of the articles I found when researching more analytic approaches to gender (in contrast to continental) is Lived Body vs Gender by Iris Marion Young, who was in the Political Science Department at University of Chicago.  The article’s basic argument is in response to an assertion by Toril Moi–who believes gender should be replaced by the concept of [...]

Thought experiments gone bad

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Okay, so I said I’d leave Egnor alone.  But this time, he’s delving into philosophical territory with a “thought experiment” purported to show that the brain is a necessary, but not sufficient, cause for the mind’s existence.
Read it here, then see if you can determine where he goes wrong.  More after the jump.

Crown Candy Kitchen

Friday, June 15th, 2007

We knew that North Saint Louis isn’t the safest neighborhood, but my partner had been there a few years before (with one of the friends, L, who joined us), and we’ve heard if you stick to the restaurant and daylight hours, you’ll be okay.

Can we move on now, please?

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Chicken Little has been proven wrong, so can we all just go on with our lives? Kudos to the Massachussetts legislature.

Resisting epistemologies of property

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Apparently there is a nomad in my alma mater’s philosophy building (read: homeless person) who is resisting the Western epistemology of property by spending some nights in classrooms.  Of course, he’s unfortunately chosen an analytic department to resist within, so he might not find much sympathy.
