Male objectification: 300

When a new film comes out, I’m sure your first thought isn’t, maybe Arbitrary Marks has a review! Probably even less so for a film like 300, the adaptation of Frank Miller’s loose adaptation of historical events surrounding the battle of Thermopylae. However, I am planning to see this movie, and I am planning to blog about it.
I have an inkling of what to expect–brutal bloodshed, homophobia (and homoeroticism), ugly lesbians, racial stereotyping and morality aligned with the idolized masculine male. Still, I’ve been thinking more about political and ethical philosophy while reading Martha Nussbaum’s Sex and Social Justice. I am interested in applying some of those ideas to the film.
So–Saturday I’ll be heading out to the theatre to watch the bloodbath and rippling pecs of 300. Before that, I’ll be hearing Krista Tippett read from her book tonight, so you can look for some discussion of that as well.
