Pointing the finger back - UU and government

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

In a comment on an earlier post about the Religious Coalition for Straight and Happy Marriage, I remarked to Dru that I find the PCA’s position on church/state domains incoherent. He reminded me–correctly–of the diversity of views within that denomination. It contains amillenialists, premillenialists and postmillenialists–readers of Tim LaHaye, Francis Schaefer and Greg Bahnsen.
Well, [...]

Andrew on governmental salvation

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Sometimes I disagree strongly with Andrew Sullivan. As when he argues that gay marriage will “domesticate” men. Other times, he hits the nail (mostly) on the head.
We fight over faith because we disagree over politics. And one response has been to construct a religious leftism that also appeals to one political party - [...]

Religious Coalition for Marriage

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

If there was ever any doubt that my old denomination (from whose membership rolls I asked to be erased) has no room in its vision for a pluralistic society in which their views live side-by-side with mine: they’re one of the signers of the “Letter from America’s Religious Leaders in Defense of Marriage.” Their [...]

Evolution and Process Thought

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

My public school education done me wrong.  Actually, that’s not accurate.  The filters I had during my public school education impaired my learning.  That’s more of a mouthful, though.
What I’m talking about is the theory of evolution.  And here I use “theory” in a non-pejorative, scientific sense, in which a theory is a framework of [...]

Memorial Day Outdoors in the Ozark

Monday, May 29th, 2006

This weekend my partner and I spent three nights camping at a resort on the Meramac River. They charged an arm and a leg for canoes and “float trips” (Midwestern code for tubing–with lots of beer), so we tried out a couple of the nearby trails.
At Onondaga State Park, we did a three and [...]

Gone Fishin’

Friday, May 26th, 2006

It’s true; I’m going camping and will be trout fishing with my rod bought tonight at the local Sprawlmart. So there will be a few days of blog-silence. My apologies in advance if you post a comment while I’m gone and it doesn’t appear. I moderate first comments to avoid spamminess.
Enjoy your [...]

One-fifth of the way

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

With about a month to go, I am one-fifth of the way through my thesis.  Last night I cranked out my first section discussing the view of time entailed by Process Thought.  Once I’m a little farther along, I may post some sections here.
In the meantime, here’s a sermon for the UU of you to [...]

Liberty not Tolerance

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Listening to NPR and getting ready to head back to work.  Patrick Henry College is being represented by Michael Farris, who just said something along the lines of “We’d like to see liberty, not tolerance.”  And when asked about the FMA, he thinks it is too weak–because it allows civil unions to take place.  Characterizing [...]

PFOX and credibility

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Most of you probably don’t know what PFOX is.  It’s an organization designed to inversely parallel PFLAG, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.  Their acronym is slightly misleading–they are the “Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays”, which should be PFOXG, or some other combination.  The emphasis, of course, is on ex-gays.
Their president is [...]

Advert for the tram

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

Just a little “advert” as they say in Great Britain, for the public transportation system in St. Louis.  I’ll admit that even I need the gas prices to kick me in the pants a bit, and encourage me to think outside of hopping in my car to drive a block.
Last night I rode my bike [...]
